An Avatar the Last Airbender Tokka Fic

Our Dumb Luck

1.

Four years after the war, Sokka decided to travel with Toph.

It a simple idea really – the universe seemed to always pair him up with his best friend, not that he would ever complain. After spending  a long time in the Southern Water Tribe, helping rebuild his village (and getting over a pretty harsh break up with a girl he still managed to be friends with), it only made sense that he would go with her.

Not that she would ever mind; after all, even the good age of sixteen, she still harbored a crush for the older teen.

And so during their stay at the Fire Nation palace after the fourth reunion, the two made their decision. While Aang and Katara went off to continue their attempts to restore the Air Temples, Toph and Sokka would travel across the Earth Kingdom doing whatever they could to help, even if it meant rebuilding villages or fighting against rebel parties. It wasn't exactly fun work, but they'd always have each other to endure the labor with.

But as it turned out, the universe had a lot more in mind for them then what they had expected.

2.

It soon became apparent that Sokka would have to do the cooking.

"Do you really want to eat burnt fish for the next year because you left a blind girl to cook for you?" Toph had pointed out, and though he knew she was right, he still didn't find himself accepting the new job wholeheartedly.

So it was only expected that his culinary skills would get better as they traveled and he cooked more, right?

Wrong.

Their first night together, he tried whipping up some elaborate meal to 'celebrate the beginning of their new journey together' as he had said. She never really questioned this at first – after all, his sister was naturally good at it and he loved eating, so it was bound to taste somewhat decent.

That was, until she returned to the camp after collecting firewood and was greeted by the smell of charred fish and rice.

"Uh… we may have to skip out on a big dinner tonight," Sokka told her sheepishly, dumping the contents of his cooking pan into the fire.

That statement held true for the rest of their travels.

3.

"We need to go this way," Sokka muttered, staring down at the charts in his hands, a perplexed look on his face. "But it doesn't lead east…"

Releasing a groan, Toph flumped down onto her back in the dirt and glared at the sky.

"Sokka, you've been looking at that map forever. Can we just pick a direction and go?"

Rather rudely, he proceeded to ignore her and continued mumbling under his breath to himself, something about east and west and how the entire map was wrong. Growing more and more annoyed by his lack of response, she flicked a pebble at his forehead.

And of course she was dead on.

"Ow!" he cried, smacking a hand to his head. "What was that for?"

"For getting us lost, because you clearly have no idea where we are!"

"I do to! This map is just drawn weird."

He spent another half hour analyzing the map before allowing them to continue walking. Toph hadn't asked (she had assumed he knew what he was doing and was too irritated to speak to him) but when they wound up at the end of the day by some seedy Earth Nation port, she knew something was wrong.

"Sokka… where are we?"

"Umm…" He pulled the map out once again. "… I think we were supposed to take that right this afternoon."

Her fist had never left a darker bruise.

4.

Nighttime easily became one of Sokka's favorite times of the day.

Only when the sun had finally drifted beneath the sun could he lie beside the campfire, rolled up in his sleeping bag, and gaze at the millions of stars before him as Toph told him stories of her travels alone. Early on it became unspoken but established that during the day he would recount his four year span away, but at night she would take the role as story teller.

"So what did you do next?" he asked eagerly, transfixed by the tale she spun that evening. He paused and his tone suddenly became playful. "Let me guess…you beat all their butts back to the Fire Nation?"

He saw her smirk briefly and roll onto her back, her eyelids falling shut and her palms moving to support the back of her head against the dirt.

"I wish I could say I did. But they had the advantage of air and surprise, and though I did kick eight of their butts, three got away," she admitted.

He took the moment to mull this over for a moment before shrugging. "I wouldn't worry about it," he said, a grin slowly growing on his lips. "Next time we run into them, you'll have me there to make sure they don't get away."

For a long few minutes, Toph did not reply. Sokka thought she had fallen asleep, for her eyes were still closed and her face was relaxed. He himself was about to drift of when he heard her speak again.

"More like you'll be there to get in the way," she yawned.

His eyes flew open.

"Hey!"

5.

They really had to hand it to Toph being rich sometimes.

How else would they have bought all new supplies when a not too careful Sokka accidentally left their packs alone at camp, only to be stolen by thieves?

"You're such an idiot," she growled, crossing her arms as she stood next to her friend. "I am never leaving you alone again because something wrong always seems to happen when I do."

"It happened one time," he argued back. "Besides, we needed some new stuff anyway."

She scowled, her pale jade eyes becoming narrow sits. "We didn't need anything, except maybe someone who could actually guard our stuff."

He rolled his eyes, having already endured enough irritable remarks about his poor watching skills. "Whatever. I'm going to go get some more fishing stuff while you get fitted. You can't run around in the same clothes for a year."

He left before she could protest and managed to find everything he needed at the fishing stand. When he returned, he discovered her already donned in new clothing and shoving the rest into her pack.

Sokka appraised her as she stood – the new attire (albeit still being the loose fitting clothing of the Earth Nation) fit her properly, hugging a bit more tightly at all the right spots while hanging loose at others. It actually made her look… attractive, a word he never before associated with his best friend.

"Why are you staring at me?" she suddenly asked, as she straightened her tunic and pants.

Flushing, he spun around and nervously scratched at the back of his neck.

"Uh, I just zoned out," he bluffed. "Come on. We still need to pick up some more food."

Toph gave him a weird look, but as she followed him out into the streets, a smile touched her lips.

He was lying.

6.

"So what happened between you and Suki?" Toph asked nonchalantly one cloudy afternoon while they stopped for a lunch break.

Taking a bite of jerky, Sokka gave an offhanded shrug. "I guess you could say we both just grew up," he told her, leaning back on one palm. "We're not the same as we were four years ago."

She smirked a bit, and without warning, her fist flew into his upper arm.

"You've always been the same to me, Ponytail. You're that sarcastic guy who'd do anything for a piece of meat."

Cringing, he rubbed at his stinging arm and replied hastily, "Yeah, well, you'll always be that short, tough girl who can take fifteen guys out at once, and never miss the chance to cause me pain."

Toph reasoned pointedly, "If you think of each punch as a hug instead of an injury, you'd learn to appreciate them more."

"Ugh. Tough love."

7.

Toph couldn't believe his luck.

Really, it was unbelievable.

Somehow, during the process of helping a family rebuild their home in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, Sokka managed to break his thumb. A 'slip of the hammer', as he had said.

What was even more ridiculous however, was how badly he milked the injury.

"Toph," he called plaintively for the third time that afternoon. "My thumb hurts." He held out his splint-bound digit, despite the fact she couldn't even see.

"And for the last time, what do you want me to do about it? Does baby want me to kiss it better?"

"Yes," he whined, pouting at her.

Sokka wasn't sure if it was the heat or if his mind was playing tricks on him. But for some reason he seemed to notice a faint blush tinge her cheeks. And he had to admit, it looked kind of cute.

Glaring at him, she said, "Complain one more time, and it won't just be your thumb that's busted."

He closed his mouth for the rest of the day.

8.

The further they ventured north, the colder it got.

At night it was the worse. One night in particular, Sokka could recall waking up to the sound of teeth chattering and the fire being out.

"Toph?" he mumbled groggily, trying to rub the sleep away from his eyes and focus on her shaking form. "Hey, are you alright?"

"F-fine." She remained turned away from him.

"You're shivering."

"I'm a-alright, just go b-back to sleep, Sokka."

Fighting the weariness he felt, Sokka crawled out into the cool air, cringed, and made his way over to her. He plopped down beside her and undid the ties of his sleeping bag before throwing it up in the air so it covered them both.

She shifted beside him, her back brushing his arm. Her voice nearly sounded like a frantic demand when she spoke next. "What are you-?"

"Next town we hit, you're getting a sleeping bag. I don't care if the earth is more comfortable." He yawned and pulled his side of the blanket over himself. "Good night, Toph."

For a long time, he felt her remain leaning up, her blank eyes staring at him. However, she did eventually lie down beside him and pulled the warm material over herself.

"Goodnight."

9.

Neither of them expected to be ambushed one afternoon.

Toph hadn't felt them approaching or nearby, for they had taken cover in the trees - it was only luck that she heard the arrow click into place and managed to pull Sokka and herself to the ground in time.

There were only six thieves and they were dispatched of quickly, (Toph later bragged that she took out five and Sokka only got one, much to his annoyance) but it wasn't until they were pulling themselves together once more that Sokka noticed something wrong.

"Um, Toph, I think you're bleeding," he pointed out, kneeling down and slowly lifting the hem of her pants. It revealed a relatively small cut about three inches long running down her calf.

"What?" Reaching a hand down, she touched her leg with a flinch and withdrew crimson fingers. She swore under her breath.

"Is it bad?" she asked.

He shook his head. "Nah. You won't need stitches or anything, but we probably shouldn't leave it open like that."

Toph groaned in protest, but he insisted and soon she found herself in the grass, her leg propped up on Sokka's knee and his hand working deftly to patch her up. She twisted blades of grace between her fingers and concentrated on his motions.

"It's days like this that I wish Katara were here," he sighed, cleaning the cut gently with a wet cloth.

She nodded, but it went unnoticed. As he finished wrapping clean dressings around her leg, he couldn't help but smile – here he had thought he'd be the one to accidentally manage to get himself hurt, not her.

"Hey Sokka?" Her voice broke his thoughts.

"Yeah?"

"Thanks."

"No problem."
Woaw. This is really old.

I forgot all about this and didn't remember until today that I had taken down my PnF exchange for NOVEMBER. D: Guh, so late! Please forgive me, Tokkaneers.

It's unfinished. Meant to add tenth segment. :/ Bah.

Feedback is welcome.

Hi. 8D;

I forgot how cute this was and how lovely and in-character you kept them. <3 I can’t remember which one was my favourite before but I’m really starting to love 2.

I'm still working on my part, jfagbadvbks I'm sorry it's so late! :( School basically swallowed me whole and my drawing mojo has only just come back. I'm planning to do something from each part though, to make up for it a bit. C:
